You may have seen her performing at the Moth in Houston or in her 3-act play during Hyde Park's Frontera Fest or possibly you've caught one of her storytelling nights in Austin. Tonight, she’s excited to share one of her favorite Hook stories with THE HOLIDAY SWEATER. Paula Northern

Is mostly a prairie wind, disrupted by the occasional tree line at the crest of a ridge. Most days, as predictable as a mid-west summer. Wondrous in the morning at first light, the ever-present threat of a storm come evening-tide.

She is a firefighter by trade and considers herself nothing special.

She prefers the solitude of days where she is a weaver of all things fiber; a spinning wheel is her favorite. On occasion, she will cast a spell or two and weave a bit of prose.

A nomad's heart, and struggles often with how to become rootless. So, she gets by with a bit of kayaking, paddling along with the river. Pretending.

In truth, She is Paula Northern

As a Giving Austin Labor Support (GALS) volunteer and newest Boardmember, I would love it if you would support GALS in our 1st Virtual Fundraiser!

Giving Austin Labor Support is getting creative this year and hosting a virtual 5K to raise money for the work we do. GALS is an organization near and dear to my heart, providing support to families who have little to no support. If you are interested in supporting families in the Austin community we would love your support in helping raise funds.

ABOUT PUSH IT: GALS Virtual 5k

GALS is all about options, support, & respect.

Founded in 2008, Giving Austin Labor Support (GALS) is dedicated to improving birth outcomes and empowering undersupported families. We provide education and support to birthing people and health care workers from pregnancy through postpartum. We've supported over 500 families through the On Call Birth Support Program, Prenatal Doula Program, and Jail Support Progam.

  • GALS works to improve outcomes by reducing unneccessay interventions. The cesarean rate with a GALS present: 15.3 % of births since 2012. Nationally this number hovers much higher than health oganizations advise with cesareans occuring in around 33% of births.
  • Satisfaction is important becuase a less traumatic birth means a lower likelihood of postpartum mental health disorders. 100 percent of GALS birthing families say the birth was better because of the GALS volunteer.
  • Building community means supporting health care workers so they can focus on the health and welbeing of the patient. 100 percent of medical staff say they would recommend GALS to another patient.

Birth workers & Volunteers make our mission come to life. Coming from a grassroots organization, GALS has grown as a nonprofit to serve the greater birth community. By providing training and resources to new and experienced birth workers and advocates, GALS provides opportunities for doulas to learn and grow in community with each other and the families we serve.
